SAX Navigator

Time Series Exploration Through Hierarchical Clustering

  • Welcome to SAX Navigator! This application will help you efficiently explore your time series data set. Zoom and pan across the tree below to explore the hierarchical structure of the clusters of your time seres. The heatmap shows the general shape of time series in that cluster. The value displayed within the dark circle at each node shows how many observations are in that cluster. Hover over a node in the tree to see details of each time series in that cluster in the Cluster Display. The search features allows you to locate an individual observation via its name/id or allow you to find specific patterns created by clicking on the grid. (current)
Filtering
  • Minimum cluster size

Trim branches of the tree so nodes only hold clusters of the minimum cluster size.

Search
  • Name / ID
  • Pattern

Create a pattern of interest by clicking on the boxes in the grid. Press "Search" to see which observations contain that pattern.

Legend
  • SAX Representation

The decomposition of the time series as letters "a,b,c, .." are derived via SAX (Lin et al. 2007). The letter "a" corresponds to the lower values of each time series. For more information about the decomposition visit our paper (Section 3).

    Heatmap Color

The values in each square of the heatmap grid represent the proportion of time series in the respective cluster that have that SAX letter at each location.

    Cluster Size

The value in each node represents the size of the cluster. E.g. the cluster below would have 38 members.
